At the height of the pandemic, we were isolated from the world, yet more connected than ever—all of us far apart but going through the same thing. We wanted to create an art experience that reflected the togetherness of this unusual moment. We thought of what was near: our hometown of Athens, Georgia; and what was far: twenty three other places in the US named Athens, and the mother of them all: Athens, Greece. What do they look like together and does it feel like traveling to hop from one to the other through photographs?
When in Athens…200 photographers submitted from near and far to an open call. Some already had photographs made in a place called Athens, others traveled to make them. Many businesses trusted us with their windows, and the installations started going up around town. We are grateful for this opportunity to create our first exhibition, to the artists for trusting us with their images, to the businesses displaying them, and to the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission for its support.
